Balk!

balk2

Plays like: I doubt it!, Baloney, Liar, etc. It goes by many names.

Players: 3+

Skill level of players: Minor Leaguers

Curate your cards: 4 cards of each position for 3-4 fans. You can have more if desired or with more fans, just keep an equal number for each position and make sure everyone knows how many there are.

Object: Get rid of all your cards

Play by Play

Shuffle and deal out cards evenly to all players. Any remaining cards go into the discard pile. On their turn, fans will state the number of cards they are discarding and the position. Discards must go in order P-C-1B-2B-3B-SS-LF-CF-RF. If you don’t have cards that specify which outfield position, scratch the LF-CF-RF for the generic OF. Play will begin with Fan A claiming how many pitchers they are discarding. The catch is that the fan may try to discard other cards at the same time. For example, Fan A has one pitcher in their hand. They claim “3 Pitchers” and discard their pitcher and two outfielders. If other players believe the claim to be true, play passes along to Fan B, who will have to discard catchers. However, if any fan doubts Fan A’s claim, they may call “BALK!” If the claim was true, the Balk-calling fan must pick up the entire discard pile. If the claim was not truthful, Fan A must pick up the entire discard pile. Play then continues in order until someone successfully discards all their cards.

Color Commentary

This is a pretty fun game to play, even with a younger crew. Just be warned that our bunch tended to call out “Balk!” all the time. They liked to catch their siblings in a lie more than they disliked getting the cards. Oh well.

Overall, this can be a little more challenging than the version using regular playing cards because you’ll have at least one card showing. Even if it doesn’t list the position on that side, savvy fans can spot certain positions when they see them and also know the positions of their favorite players. You can’t bluff your way out of all situations in this game.
